Types of Mortar
Their uses and functions in construction
1) Cement Mortar
It is a combination of cement, sand and water. It is widely used in construction for its high strength and durability.
2) Lime Mortar
It is made up of lime, sand and water and ideal for restoration due to its flexibility and breathability.
3) Gypsum Mortar
It is also known as Plater of Paris and is made from gypsum and water. It sets quickly and is primarily used for interior plastering and decorative work.
4) Surkhi Mortar
It consists of surkhi (brick dust), lime and sand. Surkhi acts as a pozzolanic material, enhancing the mortar's strength and durability.
5) Mud Mortar
It is made from clay, sand and water. It is the oldest types of mortar, traditionally used in rural and low-cost construction.
